Team Events

Last updated October 2026  ·  5 min read

In a team event (team kata, team kumite) every member is a registered competitor, and the team is entered as one unit. A team event can't be ticked as an individual add-on: each entry must create a team, join one, or enter a saved dojo team.

Setting up a team event

In Settings → Event Types, create or edit the event and set Team Size above 1. You can also set:

FieldWhat it does
Whole-team priceCharged once for the whole team, reserve included.
Per-competitor team feeWhat each member pays when they join one at a time.
Min members / Max membersOptional limits on the roster, including reserves.

Who can join a team

Under Settings → Payment, the Team Registration panel decides who competitors can team up with:

  • Anyone can join: any registrant can search for a team by name and join it, across dojos.
  • Same dojo only: competitors can only join a team from their own dojo.

How competitors enter a team

On the Select Events step, team events have their own Team events section, right under the individual events. For each one, the competitor picks:

  • Create a team: type a new team name. Teammates join by searching that name. A coach registering several competitors at once can type the same name for each, and they land on one team.
  • Join a team: search for a team a teammate already started. Full teams show Full and can't be joined. The search also says what joining costs, or that the team is already covered and joining is free.
  • My dojo's team: shown to coaches with saved teams (see below).

Team names must be unique in the event. Room on a team is checked across the whole cart, so two competitors in one cart can't push a three-person team to four.

Saved dojo teams

Head coaches build teams once, without a tournament, under My Teams in the account page (Add a Team, then pick members from the dojo roster). A dojo must exist first.

  • In registration, My dojo's team with Use enters every member you manage into that team event in one step, all on one team. Members you don't manage are listed so they can join from their own account.
  • A saved team larger than the event's maximum can't be used.
  • For upcoming tournaments your dojo is entered in, My Teams shows whether each saved team is registered and paid in each team event, with a Register or Add the rest button that opens registration with the team already picked.

How a team is charged

A team never costs more than its team price. Each member's share is the per-competitor team fee (or the whole-team price split by the team size), and each member pays the smaller of their share and what the team still owes. A reserve or late joiner on an already-covered team pays nothing. A coach entering a saved dojo team pays everything still owed at once, split evenly across the members entered.

Automatic discounts and discount codes never reduce team events. See Discounts and codes.

When you edit a team's members in the Tournament Manager, registrations follow: added members get the team event, removed members lose it, and the team price is split again over members who haven't paid yet. Paid shares stay as they are.

Which division a team competes in

A team competes in the division of its oldest or highest-ranked member. Every member's registration shows that team division, so badges and staging screens list the younger members under the team's division instead of their own age group.
