Following Your Competitors Live on Event Day

Last updated October 2026  ·  4 min read

On tournament day, parents, competitors and coaches want one answer: where is my competitor right now? The Live today box in the Taikai account shows it for every competitor you are responsible for. It shows the tatami, the time and how far along they are, from check-in to finished.

Where to find it

  • 1
Sign in at taikaiapp.com Use the same account you registered with.
  • 2
Open My Events The Live today box appears at the top, with the tournament's name.

The box stays out of the way until it is useful. It shows up around the tournament day, or as soon as something has happened, such as a check-in or a staging step. Leave the page open: it refreshes every 20 seconds while the page is visible.

Whose competitors you see

You only ever see your own people:

  • Your own competitor profile.
  • Competitors you registered yourself, for example your children.
  • Competitor profiles linked to your account or your email.
  • For coaches: the competitors on your dojo's roster who are entered in the tournament.

Nobody else's competitors appear, and competitors who are not entered in that tournament are left out.

The four steps

Each competitor gets a card. Under the name, each division they are entered in shows its tatami and start time, a one-line status and a four-step tracker:

StepWhat it means
Check-inThe check-in desk has checked them in. Until then the card says "Not checked in yet".
Lined upThe staging crew has lined them up for their division (see Staging and the line-up).
Sent to the matStaging has sent the division to the tatami, or they have already fought a bout in it. While their own bout is on, the card says "On the mat now".
CompetedThey have competed in this division.

Once their next bout is known, the card also shows its number and colour, for example "Next bout #3: RED (AKA)". That is the belt colour to have ready.

Depends on the venue: the Lined up step only moves if the tournament's staging crew uses the line-up screen. If they don't, that step is skipped. The card still says "On the mat now" during their bout and moves on as results come in.

In the Taikai app

The free Taikai app for iPhone and Android covers event day too:

  • Today shows your divisions with the mat and estimated start, what is next up and your check-in badge.
  • Watch shows the live scoreboards of the mats that are running.
  • Alerts collects approvals, results, match calls and announcements.

Emails and notifications

  • When someone registers a competitor, the competitor (or their guardian, for minors) gets an email saying who registered them and for which events. It never shows the price the coach paid.
  • When a division's bracket is published, the notice goes to the person who registered the competitor and to the competitor's own account, by email and as a notification in the app.

For directors

There is nothing to switch on. Live today works for every tournament. It is only as good as the data behind it, so:

  • Check people in at the desk (see QR code check-in setup).
  • Put every division on a tatami in the Schedule, so cards can show a tatami and a time (see Running multiple tatamis).
  • Have your staging crew use the line-up screen, so families also see when their competitor is lined up and sent.
